Object Detection Bounding Box definition

Object Detection Bounding Box definition

Dear organizer, I have some questions about the definition of the bounding box in the test dataset: SInce there's no gt bounding box label for training data, we need to use some weakly-supervised model to find it. I wonder how you define the bounding box in the test images. For example. according to the image illustrated in Home, only part of the instrument is labeled by the bounding box.

As described in the descrption, the clevis of each robotic surgical tool is considered as the ground truth for most tools with some exceptions. Can you specify s sample for each kind of tool?

So far, we only know the whole tip of monocular curve scissor would be considered. Is there any other specific exception?

Hi haozheng,

Thank you for your question.

As described in the data page, the annotation of bounding boxes is primarily around the clevis of the tool. The exceptions other than monopolar curve scissors are when the tool is fairly large and tool clevis is not visible for the most part. Such tools include tip-up fenestrated grasper, suction irrigator, stapler, grasping retractor. Other than these, all tools are annotated for the clevis. We have added this information in the data page as well.

Dear organizer,

As described in the data page, the clevis of tool is considered as the ground truth for most tools. However, the provided examples of bounding box annotations are confusing.

As the example shows, the bounding box of needle driver covers only part of the clevis. If the entire clevis belongs to GT, the bounding box should be much larger than the example shows.

We want to know what the real GT should be like? Should the whole clevis be annotated as GT according to the definition of clevis? Or only a part of clevis should be annotated as in the example provided. If so, what is the boundary of the bounding box?

By the way, does the bounding box of vessel sealer includes the surgical tip?

Hi Xiaowen,

The bounding box of needle driver covers the clevis portion of the tool, which includes the joint where the two tips meet and the joint where the clevis and shaft meet. To avoid confusion, we have updated the examples on the webpage and included examples of additional surgical tools. Please take a look here: https://surgtoolloc.grand-challenge.org/data/.

Hope this helps to answer your question. Please let us know if you have additional questions.
